Press Release: Sunset Provides Internet to Help Coordinate Firefighting Effort

November 15, 2016

(DUFFIELD, Va.)—Sunset Digital Communications was asked to provide Internet service to help in the effort to fight forest fires in the region. Sunset crews immediately began to connect the City of Norton and Wise County offices so that officials there can better communicate information concerning fires currently burning in the area. The connection was completed Monday afternoon.

The connection will be used for the daily management operations in the Command Center in Norton. Sunset is providing 100M/10M Internet connectivity during this time, with the ability to scale up to 1G as their needs dictate.

“We are happy to provide this service to those fighting the fires in our area,” says Ryan Elswick, Sunset Digital Vice President. “We’ve all been impacted by the smoke and are devastated to see the destruction these fires are causing. In such an isolated area, we understand communication is critical. We are doing anything we can to assist in their efforts.”

The Virginia Department of Forestry says there are multiple fires burning in Southwest Virginia and some are believed to be the result of arson. They are asking for the public’s help in locating those responsible for the fires, and are offering up to a $2,000 reward for information that leads to their conviction.

If you have information on these fires, you can call the Virginia Department of Forestry at 276-597-7400, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office at 276-935-2313 or the Arson Tip Line at 434-220-9053.
